Letter to the PI

November 18, 2002

Editor, the P-I

Washington State Voters have delivered a clear message to State and Local Politicians--we're not buying!

Collectively, we can avoid media over-analysis. For a moment, let Government Agencies be "retailers" and Voters be "customers". The situation becomes instantly clear. Gov't. is not providing satisfactory products, and Voters aren't buying.

For example, consider Ref. 51. This measure sounded like the "record club" to me--get 9 CD's for only a penny today, but you have to buy 12 more at regular price over the next two years. The "lure" didn't fool most of us who voted, thank goodness!

While Sound Transit was not directly on the ballot, public dissatisfaction with its projects was reflected in both the passage of I-776 and the failure of Ref. 51. The Voters are telling this Agency the following: "we don't like your products and services. It is time for you to come up with new improved better-priced products for us to buy."

And to all of you Politicians and Bureaucrats, quit whining about Tim Eyman. His success only emphasizes your inadequacies. A lack of strong credible leadership in Local, County and State Governments allows this type of movement to thrive, proving once again that "nature abhors a vacuum."

Tobey Wilkins,
Seattle
